SKYDATA and Sony of Canada Sign Distribution Agreement
TORONTO April 2nd, 2003 - Sony of Canada Ltd.s Communication
Information Solutions (CIS) Group announced today it has signed
a new distribution agreement with Skydata Corp. Under the new alliance,
Skydata will have exclusive distribution rights to Sonys S-AIT
PetaSite® library systems, Sonys new line of high-end
automation tape library systems based on S-AIT drive technology.
S-AIT is currently the industry's highest capacity data tape technology.
As a leading provider of mass storage solutions, Skydata will incorporate
Sonys S-AIT PetaSite systems into its product line, which
comprises tape drives and autoloaders. The agreement leverages both
companies leading technology and sales expertise and will
provide resellers with Sonys industry-leading S-AIT product
family within a full suite of desktop to data centre solutions.
Skydata has solid enterprise storage expertise and offers resellers
high-level storage management and SAN/NAS training. The company
has also been a longtime Sony partner, selling products and solutions
as an OEM since 1995.We are delighted to further strengthen
our relationship with Skydata, as this agreement will expand Sonys
reach to all its channel partners, said Geoffrey McMurdo,

the technical expertise to sales engineering support, Skydata offers

and their customers a reliable backup and consolidation solution,

management is already a reality for some companies, we will now
have the ability to deliver and service high-end storage solutions
that will set new precedents in the industry.
S-AIT PetaSite systems, which will be available in June, bring
high-speed backup and restores to life for enterprises and digital
content providers. Sustained native data transfer rates for the
S-AIT PetaSite library will reach up to 2.88 gigabytes (GB) per
second and a standard file can be restored in just over one minute.
Sony is also shipping its first-generation S-AIT drives and media
to tape library automation Original Equipment Manufactures (OEMs)
this spring.

SAIT technology is the latest development in high-capacity, high-performance
recording for enterprise storage. The technology utilizes a half-inch,
single-reel cartridge and provides over twice the uncompressed capacity
of the nearest linear half-inch tape drive. The first generation
of SAIT tape drives (SAIT-1) provide up to 1.3 terabytes (TB) of
compressed capacity (500 gigabytes (GB) uncompressed) and a transfer
rate of up to 78 megabytes (MB) per second compressed (30 MB/sec
uncompressed).
