SAN Infrastructure
For
over 20 years, Ethernet has been used to move file-oriented data
via the Internet Protocol (IP). In the last decade, Fibre Channel
SANs using SCSI protocol have evolved as the best way to move block
storage data.
iSCSI is a new protocol that enables block-oriented storage data
to be carried by Ethernet networks. The promise of iSCSI is to simplify
networking by merging block and file traffic onto a single Ethernet
infrastructure.
Now you have a choice of SANs. A Fibre
Channel SAN, an iSCSI
SAN, or a combination of both.
Both iSCSI and Fibre Channel technologies will co-exist in the foreseeable
future, addressing different markets and user requirements. iSCSI
will expand the SAN market by lowering the total cost of entry and
management for enterprises that have not adopted Fibre Channel.
